Registration Now Open for Free Suicide Prevention Training in Canton

Canton, NY — Registration is now open for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), a free, two-day suicide prevention workshop being offered by the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department, with support from the Suicide Prevention Center of New York and the St. Lawrence County Suicide Awareness Coalition.

Every day, people in our communities struggle with thoughts of suicide — and every day, ordinary people can make a life-saving difference. LivingWorks ASIST empowers participants with the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills needed to intervene when it matters most.

ASIST is not just for counselors or mental health professionals. The training is open to anyone willing to care, listen, and take action — including family members, friends, coworkers, educators, faith leaders, and community members.

Led by certified LivingWorks trainers, the interactive workshop takes place over two engaging days and emphasizes real conversations, group practice, and shared reflection in a safe, supportive environment. Participants will learn how to:

  • Build confidence to ask directly about suicide
  • Listen with empathy and without judgment
  • Explore personal attitudes and beliefs that may affect their ability to help
  • Create a collaborative Safety Plan to help someone stay safe in the moment
  • Connect individuals to further care and ongoing support
